Rocks, stones and pebbles

Written by Sandy Marker

Lugging heavy bags that contained an assortment of stones to class soon paid off with a plethora of ideas of how to incorporate them into ikebana arrangements.

I was told by my first Sensei that stones have a very strong heart, which could and often overpowered an arrangement. Today Sensei, Seiseki Umemura said if we wet the stones it softens them bringing them to life making it more harmonious with the plant material.

I am not sure I have witnessed stones used in so any ways, such as hanging, stacked inside or outside the container, balanced, drilled etc and I am sure there are a few other secrets as to how the stones were used.

Enjoy the collection of fun ideas and maybe never look at a stone the same way again
