Large Leaves

Written by Sandy Marker

What constitutes large leaves and where to find large leaves? Take a moment to see the huge Monstera Deliciosa climbing over the park fence in an unruly fashion or the Philodendron tucked in a corner of the garden along with unkempt Aspidistra leaves growing profusely. Even in Sydney you may be lucky to have a banana plant in your garden. We seem to be conditioned to look for more manageable sized material so to have this challenge was a feeling of freedom.

Dealing with a huge leaf can be challenging because balance and proportion seems to drive the design. The lesson saw students manipulate the leaves to create fantastic surfaces, depth, form and elements of intrigue with a splash of colour as the focal point. No matter what the theme is we should always take into consideration the elements and properties of Sogetsu.
