Installation at Bob Cherry’s Paradise Gardens May 2009
On the open weekends at Paradise Gardens every spring and autumn our Sogetsu Group is invited to do indoor and / or outdoor arrangements
The gardens are an absolute inspiration with an abundance of material – from palms, exotic and native trees, shrubs, reeds and rushes, and of course the camelias for which Paradise is famous.
Sandy Marker, Margaret Hall and Jorgen Rasmussen set about gathering, with inspiration coming from the palm grove where masses of splades had dropped to the ground. A group installation was constructed on the lawn. The splades were stripped of their leaves, inverted, and two or three together supported by star pickets. Each splade could move a little in the wind – an amazing effect In the second installation more than 20 palm flower inflorescenses were arranged in a curve, suggesting a dragon, with the head breathing fire represented with orange cycad fruits, and the tail of orange flower stems. It was a great joy and a lot of fun to be working in such inspiring surroundings and we believe the installations were greatly admired by the visitors to the garden during the weekend.
