Paradise Plants - August

Written by Sandy Marker

Perfect weekend, could not ask for better weather and a garden putting on an amazing display.

The four Sogetsu artists, Joan Perkins, Jenny Goodwin, Sandy Marker and Jorgen Rasmussen enjoyed the choice of materials, which was overwhelming. Equating it to a ‘kid in a candy store,’ what do we select? Each corner of the garden offers a plethora of floral materials with countless design formations, colours and textures. Joan chose to work with leaves, stocks and Strelitzia, and her other arrangement of twisted willow with a camellia in an amazing container. The lichen-covered branch teamed with a white camellia was Jenny’s choice. Jenny also worked with the seeds of the Clivia lily and variegated leaves in a Moribana container. Jorgen’s passion for the Macadamia nuts did not fail us this year, using the catkins and the early bearing fruit supported by a fork added an interesting dimension to his display. Jorgen was also creative in using a palm splades as a water container to arrange blossom and Rufus palm. Sandy used her own crafted containers – bunches of pine needles, making a rich mass of green, which contrasted with a stunning red camellia. Green Goddess lilies and a palm leaf made a striking arrangement in the corner. Bob Cherry’s expressed his wish to display an Italian style pumpkin with an orchid and leaf to top off the simple arrangement.

An installation of bound palm splades was constructed on the lawn to show that Ikebana can really be done anywhere.

The Sogetsu members appreciate Bob and Derelie’s generous support of Ikebana and we look forward to returning to the gardens for the open weekend on 1st and 2nd May 2010 to create more arrangements that are wonderful
